Kyary Pamyu Pamyu

Meanwhile in Japan…

Does the title of this article make sense to you?  If so then you already know who this is.  She is a 19 year old model and blogger turned pop singer.  Her full stage name is “Caroline Charonplop Kyary Pamyu Pamyu”.

The ultra-sweet J-pop sound of this is a bit cute to my ear.  I must have lived in Japan for tooo long.  I can see the appeal of it to young Japanese girls.  I think that the colors in the videos, and in PonPonPon especially, give the scene a psychedelic effect.

I am surprised by the use of a startling number of American culture references (icons?) in the videos (including: Kraft Macaroni and Cheese, BottleCaps, Lifesavers, Crunch and Munch, etc…) that are not in the least bit relatable to young Japanese people.  I get confused by the meaning of why it is included when a lot of Americans can probably notice so much but Japanese just see a lot of bright colors.

Her blog (http://ameblo.jp/kyarypamyupamyu/) is quite visual so even if you do not understand Japanese, you can enjoy all the bizarre imagery that she posts there.
